Lahore Marathon 2007

Participating at the Lahore Marathon 2007

Sindh Disability Forum participated at Lahore Marathon 2007 with enthusiastic way. A 150 persons delegation moved from Karachi on 12 January 2007 to Lahore by train for 15 hours journey. With the efforts of SDF member organization DWA's President Javed Raees Government of Punjab and Government of Sindh involved with SDF for attending Marathon. Same time side efforts also made by another member organization ARCP's President Mobin. Purpose of participation in Marathon was not only to create healthy activities among Person with Disabilities but it was targeted to achieve multiple goals like awareness, study, inclusion, recreation and networking. Before attending Marathon a side event of Milestone Society attended on 13 January 2007. In this program including other Person with Disabilities DWA members were supported through provision of wheelchairs and President of DWA Javed Raees and Deputy Speaker of Sindh Assembly Ms. Raheela Tivana awarded by Milestone for thier work including other dignities. On 14 January after participation in Marathon visited Marathon camp for Person with Disabilities arranged by Local Disabled peoples' Organization Risingstar, SDF members were served with food then a meeting of Person with Disabilities held at the camp to review some joint matters of interest including formation of Punjab Disability Forum (PDF) and inclusion in National Paralympics committee. On 15 January 2007 a field visit was organized through this Person with disabilities from south availed opportunity of visiting various historical, religious places and attended flag ceremony on Pakistan India border at Wagha. On 16 January 2007 with collaboration of Life Independent Living Center a special session on Independent Living held at Milestone Society's office at Lahore. Same day delegate returned back to Karachi. This year Punjab Government invited Person with Disabilities from South arranged travelling from south to north, local accessible transportation (five buses including three wheelchair accessible buses), accommodation and food. A team of Sindh Government supervised all arrangements under the leadership of Deputy Speaker of Sindh Legislative Assembly. Media also covered this event in this way a lot of awareness created about disability. It was a huge achievement of SDF mobilized 150 person's delegate with Wheelchairs, tri-cycles and white canes.
