2006 U.N. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF DISABLED PERSONS - Message from Venus Ilagan, Chairperson
Greetings to friends and colleagues on the 2006 United Nations International Day of Disabled Persons. 2006 has been, and continues to be a historic year for persons with disabilities around the world. This year saw the Ad Hoc Committee on the U.N. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities adopt the treaty elaborating our rights.
As we await formal adoption of the treaty by the U.N. General Assembly later this month, we celebrate the people, the States Parties, the Committee chairpersons and all those individuals and agencies who invested so much of themselves to bring the dream of a treaty to this important stage. My congratulations, and my gratitude to everyone!
2006 is also significant to DPI as we work with our colleagues in South Korea to prepare for our 7th World Assembly. In just nine short months, DPI members, friends and supporters from over 100 countries will gather in Seoul to celebrate the Convention, and to celebrate women with disabilities the world over.
I am pleased to share with you as well the commitment made by the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) to work with DPI and our colleagues to ensure implementation of our rights as women with disabilities to enjoy sexual and reproductive health as delineated in the Convention. The UNFPA is the first international agency to actively respond to our requests for support on this issue, and we welcome their collaboration and partnership into the future.
My thanks to everyone who has worked with DPI over the past year and, again, my best wishes for December 3, 2006.
